AI as a tool
Well, it just happened, that I wrote a draft about how AI as a tool used where I work, but I decided to never release that, because it sparked another post idea under the same title, even when the conclusion is not the same as I originally planned. This might sound a little pessimistic, but I think we reached a point in life, where we lost the art of software development to LLM (AI from now). "Lost the art" maybe not the right expression here. Here's what I mean. I use AI as a tool at the work, to help me deliver required things faster, and because I somewhat have to. This is business. Do not get me wrong, I see both sides of the coin, I know exactly what are the positives and negatives using this technology. I raised my concerns using AI as a tool to people in positions above me, but they do not see any problems whatsoever. So I just do my job, stay "productive" and at the end of the day I just go home.
But a question always kept creeping at the back of my mind. Should I use AI for my pet projects too? I really like learning new thing, using my brain, solving problems, but AI could help me create thing faster; and here lies the problem. Why should I pay for a subscription and use it when I won't see any money from it? My plan isn't to sell software, service to others. I don't use it for business and for me it absolutely does not make sense to use it when I want to build something by learning. Even if I release a pet project, there is a divide in what people want. I see two groups: one group of people who do not care about if my software or service is built with AI, they just want a solution for their problem; the other group consist of "purists" (loosely said), who would not touch anything that is created with AI. Also, if everybody have access to AI, why should they use something created by others, if they can create that exact same thing in a short time?
This is the reason I think, we might lost the art of developing, because if this is the case, why should anybody create something for others? We though low-code and no-code is the future, but with the help of AI, developing something is not a problem anymore. Everyone could just create the same thing for themselves over and over again. I could do that too, but I won't. I will just learn, or re-learn things on my own, the old fashioned way. The only thing that could change my mind, if I find some really exclusive business opportunity, that nobody can re-make with AI, only then will I use AI for it; isn't this some sort of a paradox? Currently, I do not see where is this thing called "AI" heading. Is this a legitimate tool or is this just a bubble waiting to pop? I find both scenarios scary.
